The recognition that supporting copyright-related professional development opportunities is a value held by the ABC Copyright Conference, the 2020 Steering Committee has established three scholarships. These are to help offset the recipients’ attendance-related costs for the 2020 conference, to be hosted by the University of Alberta Copyright Office on May 21 and 22.
The scholarships support attendance by individuals with a strong copyright interest who, due to financial constraints, would not otherwise be able to attend.
Who Can Apply
The scholarships are open to anyone who resides or works in Canada and is unable to attend the conference due to financial constraints. Those attendees who receive full funding from their employers to attend the conference are not eligible. Those who receive partial funding may apply, provided they demonstrate financial need.
What does the Scholarship Cover?
Three scholarships of up to $1,000 each will be awarded to offset expenses related to travel and lodging. Conference registration valued at $325 is provided in addition to the $1,000 allocated for travel and lodging.
How to Apply
- Write an essay of not more than two double-spaced pages or 500 words, showing your interest in copyright and why attendance at the conference is important to you.
- Indicate whether you are currently employed in a copyright position and/or how copyright is related to the work you do, or wish to do.
- Summarize what attending the ABC Copyright 2020 Conference would mean to your professional development.
- Explain why the scholarship should be granted to you.
- Describe how you intend to share the information that you learn at the Conference with others.
- Provide a short explanation to demonstrate your financial need for a scholarship.
Submit your essay before the deadline to copyright@ualberta.ca, with the subject line “ABC Copyright Scholarship Application”.
Selection Criteria
Two of the three scholarships are available to all applicants. In the interest of advancing inclusivity and diversity in the field of copyright practice, one scholarship is reserved for those who self-identify as Indigenous in their application. In the absence of any applications from Indigenous persons, all three scholarships will be available for distribution.
Selection will be based on the strongest candidates demonstrating:
- Strong interest in copyright and/or the extent to which the applicant is involved in copyright
- Financial need
- Commitment to advancing an understanding of copyright in their workplace setting
- Special consideration will be given to candidates who are first-time conference attendees
All applications will be reviewed by the Steering Committee. The successful candidates will be selected based upon the details included in the individual applications received. The scholarship is not transferable and must be used in the same year that it is awarded.
Deadline [Note: This deadline has been extended]
Applications for scholarships must be received by February 21, 2020. Late applications will not be accepted. [The previous deadline was February 14.]
Successful recipients will be notified by email on February 28, 2020. If a scholarship is awarded, applicants must respond and confirm their acceptance. Those who do not respond by March 5, 2020, will forfeit their award to the next candidate selected by the Steering Committee.
